Behavioral Services for Children and Youth

The Pediatric Behavior Clinic is an outpatient psychiatric clinic serving youth ages 3 – 18 who are medically complex and have behavioral health-related issues. Services offered include psychiatric and psychological evaluation, medication management, individual therapy and neuropsychological testing. While financial assistance is available, the services provided at this clinic are best suited for people who have insurance.

Valley Behavioral Health – Outpatient Services for Children

Valley’s outpatient services for children are available for youth with a mental health diagnosis from infancy through age 18. For clients aged 12 and older, they also offer substance use services, including those focused on co-occurring disorders. The services offered include assessments, family, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, abuse and trauma treatment and medication management. Valley accepts Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and self-pay plans, as well as offering a sliding fee scale based on income.

The YWCA of Utah provides a women in jeopardy crisis shelter, a crisis hotline, and transitional housing. Through the Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center, they also provide confidential services that include crisis intervention, protective orders, victim’s legal assistance, and safety planning.

Confidential Shelter offers 24-hour hotline and advocacy services, emergency shelter and supportive services (case management, counseling, psycho educational groups, Children’s Learning Center) to men, women and children fleeing their homes due to domestic violence. The shelter has 12 rooms and 57 beds. Residents must be a victim of domestic violence as defined by the state of Utah and in immediate danger in order to qualify for our services.

In addition, they provide housing assistance to over 2,100 households through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, and 400 units that were acquired through non-federal funds.

This phone number provides free crisis response and hospital diversion programs. The crisis line is staffed with licensed clinicians and can provide a Mobile Crisis Outreach Team to any Salt Lake County resident who is experiencing a mental health crisis.

Substance Abuse Treatment and Support Groups

First Step House

First Step House provides three weekly support groups for those in recovery for substance use disorders. These groups are available to any person who has received treatment services from First Step House. This facility serves adult males, age 18 or older, who have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder. They provide targeted services for veterans, people with little to no income, fathers, those who are legally involved, and people who are homeless or have unstable housing.

Cornerstone Counseling Center

Through Volunteers of America, Cornerstone Counseling Center offers addiction recovery services, which include support groups. There are process-oriented recovery groups, skills-focused psychoeducational groups, and a Dialectical Behavior Therapy group. Many of these groups teach skills that help clients to prevent relapse, enhance coping, improve communication, develop healthy relationships, and regulate emotions. Services are provided on a sliding scale to reach those who may otherwise be unable to afford treatment.

Rape Recovery Center offers a 24/7 crisis line, a hospital response team, advocacy, community education and referrals to sexual assault victims and their loved ones. This facility also provides group and individual therapy on a sliding fee scale from $0-75. The minimum age to be eligible for services is 18.

The Family Support Center offers multiple services to help families, including crisis nurseries throughout the Salt Lake Valley, a parenting class, and family mentor programs. Their parenting class is a ten-week course that teaches parents about child development, how to develop positive relationships, how to improve communication skills, ways to use non-abuse discipline and behavior management skills, and other supportive and protective skills for raising children. The classes are provided free or at a low cost.

Midvale Family Health Clinic assists vulnerable individuals and families in Salt Lake County in accessing primary health care services. SLDDS has a donated dental program staffed by volunteer dentists to provide free services for the homeless and indigent. Individuals seeking this care enter their name into a drawing a day ahead of time and all patients who are treated are “drawn” daily. SLDDS also offers discounted services for those who do not qualify for the free program. Proof of eligibility is required at every visit for both programs.
